About the Club
Our aims are, to share modelling knowledge, abilities and skills, to build and operate club layouts and to participate in inter-club meetings, exhibitions and other social events.
We meet at the Tangley Parish Village Hall at Wildhern, 4 miles north of Andover, Grid Ref. SU 351510, Post Code: SP11 0JE
Our Club meeting nights are each Wednesday evening between 7.30pm and 10.30pm. On the first Wednesday of January, March, July and October we hold business meetings.
As well as these club meetings, we organise trips to preserved railways, other clubs, exhibitions, hold other rail theme social events and organise an annual two day exhibition.
We have layouts in ‘OO’, ‘O’ and also, in construction, two OO code 75 layouts and an ‘N’ gauge layout. We try to set aside at least one night a month for a running evening, when at least one layout will be operational.
If you would like more information about the club, layouts or exhibition please contact our Secretary. If you have a problem with your own model railway trains or layout, there is usually someone within the club who is an expert on some aspect of model railways who could probably help you.
A bit of history
The 'Junction Hotel' was the location of the first meeting of The Andover Model Railway Club, which was formed with twelve members in February 1979.
The first 'club' house was an old coaching shed in the Hotel's yard. A floor had to be put into this shed before a start could be made on the first model project a 30' x 8' permanent 00 layout.
In 1981, then with thirty members, the club held the first of its exhibitions.
In April 1990 due to a proposed second rebuilding of the shed site, the club became homeless. It was to remain so for twelve months. Our 'Newsletter', which began at this time to keep members informed of progress in the search for premises, is still going strong.
For a brief period meetings were held at the 'Way Out' Community Club. However, as there was no storage available this could only be a short term solution.
After a long search, in April of 1993 we moved into our next home, an 18th century listed stable/barn in the grounds of the Station Hotel, Bridge Street, Andover.
In July 2004 we had to vacate the Stable Barn at the Station Hotel due to the condition of the building. In September 2004, after a search of local sites, we were able to find accommodation at Tangley Parish Village Hall at Wildhern.
In September 2004 we held our first 2 day Model Railway Exhibition. We re-located the exhibition to Winton School for two years, but we are now back at John Hanson school.
After 12 years at Wildhern we have decided that we are unlikely to move in the near future and have increased our layout storage facilities.
